I enjoyed the <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Yacoubian-Building-Ala-Al-Aswany/dp/9774248627">Yacoubian building</a>, a clever and witty exposition of Egypt after the rise of Nasser. Aswany's writing has sensitively chronicled modern Egypt ever since.
