Another friend of mine was a pianist. I asked him once what a socialist realist composer was. He thought for a moment, then said: "Those who are dead, and those who say they are." A student once came up to me and said: "I feel I should tell you I have to report on you to the police." Beaming, he continued: "But I always say nice things."

So Poles kept their minds and spirits pretty free of Communism during those hard years. It is one reason why they have managed to create so quickly the well-performing two-party democracy that they now have.

Lol...the former communists shape shifted overnight into the social democrats, from which position they could continue fully indulging their corrupt kleptocratic tendencies, merely substituting BMW's, Merc's and VW's for the Lada's and Zil's of the previous regime. Nothing has changed, Poland is still a corrupt third world cesspit...

I'm sorry but that's load of bs. She can't mean that Kolakowski or Bauman weren't communists? Both of them at the time proclaimed they were that! Anyway it just shows that Poles are a bunch of untrustworthy opportunists and I don't know which is better.
